Do you need new ideas for books
for you book club? Do you wonder where
you can get some background information for authors? The Northfield Public Library has a number of
reference and circulating books that can be used for book selection and author information. If you click on the tab “For Book Clubs” on
the Readers Corner webpage, you will
find a list of print resources and online resources that are available in our
library. If the call number begins with
R, the book will be in the reference shelves.
The book can be used in the library, but cannot be checked out. Books beginning with a number will be on the
circulating shelves and the book can be checked out.
I facilitate the Contemporary
Women Writers Book Group at the library.
We meet on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the meeting
room library. Our group has been meeting
for almost 7 ½ years. Group members
often suggest titles that they have heard mentioned or have already read.
I check to
be sure that there are enough copies of the book in the SELCO system, since our
group is sponsored by the library.
I have used some of the books in
our library to get ideas for books for our group.
Recently, I
read through the book Read On- Women’s
Fiction: Reading lists of every taste, by Rebecca Vnuk. The book was published in 2009. There are many titles in that book that will
appeal to readers in our group. I made a
list of authors and titles, and checked that there are enough copies in the
SELCO system. Members now have another
list of books to consider when suggesting new titles.
A companion title to the above
books is Women Fiction Authors: a
Research Guide, also written by Rebecca Vnuk and published in 2009. This reference book is a good source for
background information on authors for books you have chosen. Also, it can be another place for ideas for
titles.
I will
discuss other resources for book groups in future blogs.
